Cambridge general English exams are mainly aimed at young people and adults and assess the use of English in academic and professional contexts.
Exams designed specifically for children and teenagers are adapted to their age and educational environment, with content and tasks that reflect their school experience, while maintaining the same quality standards and international validity.
Cambridge English offers exams for all levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A2 to C2:
A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. Each exam certifies English language ability according to the candidate’s academic or professional needs.
The most suitable exam depends on your current level of English and your objective.
For example, B1 Preliminary is an important first step for intermediate learners and shows the ability to use English in everyday situations.
B2 First certifies an upper-intermediate level, suitable for studying or working independently in an English-speaking environment.

Cambridge exams are organised by level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The usual order is:
A2 Key (KET), B1 Preliminary (PET), B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE) and C2 Proficiency (CPE).
B1 Preliminary (PET) is a higher level than A2 Key (KET). PET certifies an intermediate level of English, while KET corresponds to a basic level.
No. You do not need to hold a previous certificate to register for a higher-level exam. You can enter directly for the exam that best matches your current level of English.
An exam centre is authorised by Cambridge to administer official exams.
A preparation centre offers exam preparation courses but does not necessarily run exams. Some centres, such as International House Madrid, combine both roles.
You can register directly through our exam centre, either online or by contacting our team. We will inform you about available dates, formats and registration deadlines.
You will need a valid official identity document (ID card, passport or NIE). The personal details must exactly match the information used during registration.
The Confirmation of Entry (CoE) is the document that confirms your exam registration. It includes key information such as the date, venue, timetable and your candidate number. It is sent a few days before the exam and should be checked carefully.
The content, level and validity of the exam are exactly the same.
The difference lies in the format: in the computer-based (digital) version, the exam is taken on a computer and results are usually available sooner than for the paper-based exam.
Cambridge does not issue duplicates of the original certificate. However, you can request a Certifying Statement, an official document confirming your results, through Cambridge English.
