Frequently asked questions about Cambridge qualifications

What is the difference between general English exams and those specifically designed for children and teenagers preparing for the exam at their school?

Cambridge general English exams are mainly aimed at young people and adults and assess the use of English in academic and professional contexts.
Exams designed specifically for children and teenagers are adapted to their age and educational environment, with content and tasks that reflect their school experience, while maintaining the same quality standards and international validity.

How many exam levels does Cambridge have?

Cambridge English offers exams for all levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from A2 to C2:
A2 Key, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency. Each exam certifies English language ability according to the candidate’s academic or professional needs.

How do I know which exam is right for me?

The most suitable exam depends on your current level of English and your objective.
For example, B1 Preliminary is an important first step for intermediate learners and shows the ability to use English in everyday situations.
B2 First certifies an upper-intermediate level, suitable for studying or working independently in an English-speaking environment.
For more advanced learners, C1 Advanced demonstrates a high level of fluency and language competence, while C2 Proficiency certifies near-native mastery of English.

What is the order of the Cambridge exams?

Cambridge exams are organised by level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The usual order is:
A2 Key (KET), B1 Preliminary (PET), B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE) and C2 Proficiency (CPE).

Which level is higher, PET or KET?

B1 Preliminary (PET) is a higher level than A2 Key (KET). PET certifies an intermediate level of English, while KET corresponds to a basic level.

Do I need a previous certificate to take a higher-level exam?

No. You do not need to hold a previous certificate to register for a higher-level exam. You can enter directly for the exam that best matches your current level of English.

What is the difference between a Cambridge exam centre and a Cambridge preparation centre?

An exam centre is authorised by Cambridge to administer official exams.
A preparation centre offers exam preparation courses but does not necessarily run exams. Some centres, such as International House Madrid, combine both roles.

How can I register for or purchase a Cambridge exam?

You can register directly through our exam centre, either online or by contacting our team. We will inform you about available dates, formats and registration deadlines.

What documents do I need to take the exam?

You will need a valid official identity document (ID card, passport or NIE). The personal details must exactly match the information used during registration.

What is Confirmation of Entry (CoE)?

The Confirmation of Entry (CoE) is the document that confirms your exam registration. It includes key information such as the date, venue, timetable and your candidate number. It is sent a few days before the exam and should be checked carefully.

What is the difference between the paper version and the computer version of the exam?

The content, level and validity of the exam are exactly the same.
The difference lies in the format: in the computer-based (digital) version, the exam is taken on a computer and results are usually available sooner than for the paper-based exam.

How can I obtain a duplicate of my Cambridge certificate?

Cambridge does not issue duplicates of the original certificate. However, you can request a Certifying Statement, an official document confirming your results, through Cambridge English.
